What Are The Odds?

Has it ever occurred to you how many things that happen in your life that you just blame on chance?

We tend to live our lives so casually when really; each and every one of us is treading on a designed path. When I say designed, I do not mean to say "fully tailored", but in a sense, a rough sketch is made that our days and choices shape up to create what we call "life".

According to a study, the chances of you being born as you is 1 in 102,685,000 — yes, that's a 10 followed by 2,685,000 zeroes!

Let's take it to a smaller scale…

What are the odds of you attempting to open a door that is usually locked but is open that one time?

What are the odds of you driving home and hitting the green light every single time?

What are the odds of you finding that one ring you lost more than five years ago in a pocket of one of your bags?

What are the odds of you being so rushed to get somewhere and elevator doors open in a warm embrace just as you were hurriedly approaching it?

Actually, that last one is up for debate. I am sometimes called "the lucky elevator girl" because the times that that has happened to me is beyond belief. What is even more bizarre is that most times, the elevator is empty! Some of my friends have even pulled me along when they are late to being somewhere just so they would get into the elevator sooner, completely believing I am their elevator lucky charm. Now, comparing the time between waiting for an elevator and having it readily available, it's quite short, but when you're late to class or trying to get to a meeting or a test, every second counts. I don't know why it happens so often to me, but it does make me smile every time. Like I have a spirit friend that looks after me and hits the elevator button before I get to it. It is also amusing to see the looks of disbelief on the security ladies’ faces at university whenever it happens. They’ve seen me walking straight into an elevator so many times that it wouldn’t surprise me if I found out they’re keeping count and wagering on it!

Here’s another one for you, and curly heads would understand this most.

You do the exact same routine before/during/after a shower to get your ringlets how you want them to be, but the odds of you getting the exact same results more than two times in a row is close to impossible! Sure, your mane is tamed and you don’t look like you just got out of a fight, but it’s not always “curly-head-standard” perfect. Even though people around you would tell you how pretty your curls are, you know what a really prefect hair day is like. Then again, sometimes when you do have a perfect curly hair day, you have nowhere to go and no one to meet up with. So, that’s one chance gone and you never know when then next one’s coming up.

So…

What odds come to your mind?

Perhaps you flipped the channel and found your favorite show just starting, or got a double scoop ice-cream instead of one scoop because you were the 100th customer, or maybe you got a free top with purchase and it just happened to be in your favorite color.

If you think about it, there are things in life that pass us by as mere coincidences… but are they really?

What are the odds of you finding someone that is your exact reflection, except not physically, just mentally?

What are the odds of you almost heading out of a supermarket but you remember to get something and double back to get it, then when you’re back in line, you bump into someone you recognize but never actually met?

What are the odds…?

Think about it.

Would you have met a person that later becomes one of your closest friends had you not asked for directions?

Would you have discovered your now most favorite place to eat had you not gotten lost on the way to a different place?

It’s all so mysterious beyond our human recognition. I can’t explain it, and neither can you. It’s just the nature of things, life attracts us into things we have no control over.

Just know this… there are no coincidences.

It’s just the path that was designed for you. Take it, and enjoy the ride. Find the next piece of your puzzle.

Until next time,

Maha
